Set as a memorial archway around the doorway of the school's library, the splash of colorful tiles painted by family, friends, colleagues, and students, serves as a reminder to all who pass through this portal, that education is better for having had Diane as one of its pillars - that life goes on, as Diane would have wanted - and more's the point, that it is a blessing with each child that passes through this hallowed place of becoming...
On the morning of May 31, 2003, before the retirement festivities of Rich Lohman later that afternoon, my wife and I, with our daughter and grand-daughter, visited Marin School to see the newly installed wall of tiles - very touching, this. Later the next week I returned to visit with Christine Julian's 4th grade class for my annual discussion of WWII and the relocation of Japanese-Americans as part of her U.S. history curriculum, and while I was on campus I asked principal Marion Rothchild, secretary Ellen Benson, and Christine to pose for me near Diane's wall for these portraits...
