Intimate Landscapes

Intimate Landscape I associate with photographer Eliot Porter's work - it refers to those close-up shots that are segments taken from within a larger context, such as a grand vista. It may be a subject isolated out of a more complex array, or one perspective out of several that otherwise compete for attention. At times an intimate landscape may give a hint of something larger, a sug- gestion of that which is outside the frame of the photograph, or it may be a total statement in and of itself. It can be at once intimate, meaning very close and familiar as a favorite toy, or enigmatic, mysterious, and ripe with intrigue.
